OBITUARY

James Spence RSW RGI PAI. We have learned of the passing of James Spence in March 2016. He was a long-standing member and a PAI Diplomate.

Born in 1929 his artistic career spanned 60 years, he was a teacher and with his wife, Anda Paterson RSW RGI PAI and James Morrison RSA RSW, was a co-founder of the Glasgow Group in 1957. He exhibited widely at home, Europe and Russia. His work attracted many awards at PAI and RSW Annual Exhibitions and from the BBC. His paintings are held in many important collections including H.M.The Queen. His humour and longevity connected generations of Scottish art allowing many a young artist to see long dead and exalted figures in an informal and realistic light.
